청춘 (Youth)

청춘靑春이란 인생의 어느 한 기간~을 말하는 것이 아니라,
마음의 상태狀態’를 말한다.
그것은 장미빛 뺨, 앵두같은 입술, 하늘거리는 자태姿態가 아니라
강인한 의지意志, 풍부한 상상력想像力, 불타는 열정熱情을 말한다.
청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘물에서 오는 신선한 정신精神,
유약柔弱함을 물리치는 용기, 안이安易를 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.

때로는 20의 청년보다 60이 된 사람에게 청춘이 있다.
나이를 먹는다고 해서 우리가 늙는 것이 아니다.
이상理想을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다.
세월은 우리의 주름살을 늘게 하지만
열정을 가진 마음을 시들게 하지는 못한다.
고뇌, 공포, 실망 때문에 기력氣力이 땅으로 들어갈 때,
비로소 마음이 시들어 버리는 것이다.

60세이든 16세이든 모든 사람의 가슴 속에는
놀라움에 끌리는 마음,
젖먹이 아이와 같은 미지未知에 대한 끝없는 탐구심,
삶에서 환희歡喜를 얻고자 하는 열망熱望이 있는 법이다.

그대와 나의 가슴 속에는
남에게 잘 보이지 않는 그 무엇이 간직되어 있다.
아름다움, 희망, 용기, 영원永遠의 세계에서 오는 힘.
이 모든 것을 간직하고 있는 한
언제까지 그대는 젊음을 유지할 것이다.

영감靈感이 끊어져
정신이 냉소冷笑라는 눈에 파묻히고,
비탄悲嘆이란 얼음에 갇힌 사람은
비록 나이가 20세라 할지라도 이미 늙은이와 다름없다.
그러나, 머리를 드높여 희망希望이란 파도를 탈 수 있는 한
그대는 80세일지라도 영원한 청춘의 소유자일 것이다.

The Youth…

Youth is not a time of life－it is a state of mind.
It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees.
It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions.
It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of
the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.

This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of the 20.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give enthusiasm wrinkle the soul.
Worry, Doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair－these are the long,
long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is every human being’s heart the lure of wonder,
the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and
the joy of the game of living.

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
so long as it receive massages of beauty, hope, cheer,
courage and power from men from the infinite, so long are you young.

When aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of
cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20.
But as long as your aerials are up, to each waves of optimism,
there is hope you may die young at 80.

1840년 독일에서 태어난 유태계 – 사무엘 울만은 미국 앨라배마 주에 정착한 뒤 많은 시를 썼다.
그의 작품은 종교적인 시, 부인 엠마에게 바치는 시, 비탄과 죽음을 주제로 한 시, 생명을 읊은 시로 대별된다.

청춘! 아, 듣기만 해도 싱그럽고 넘실거리는 역동성! 그 뜨거운 피!
그러나 청춘은 나이로 가늠하는 것이 아니라 희망의 전파를 끊임없이 잡는 한
여든의 노인도 청춘으로 죽을 수 있다는, 사무엘 울만의 조용한 외침은 큰 울림을 주고 있습니다.

청춘! 불타는 끊임없는 열정! 아, 풀꽃향기처럼 풋풋하고 아침이슬처럼 촉촉한 말,
당신은 영원한 청춘으로 이 길을 가고 싶지 않으십니까?
